Hida-Furukawa Japan

Today was a free day but we all took a twenty minute train trip to a small town near Takayama – Hida-furukawa .  Like Takayama, this town has a heritage area.  We visited two temples, the Enkouji Temple and the Honkouji Temple. The latter is famous for the workmanship in its gate.  (photo) A small river runs through the town and along it are found white wall clay store houses (photo).  There are quite a number or artisans in the town, notably in the candle-making and textile trades.  The town also has festivals with floats similar to those in Takayama.  Very popular with the members of our group are the sake breweries which offer free tastings.  Several are to be found in this town.  After returning to Takayama, I visited the History and Art Museum.  It is a modern facility with some effort at providing explanations in English.  Entry was free and I enjoyed the artefacts and art on exhibit.  Tomorrow we head to Kanazawa via a couple of mountain towns.
