Armacao dos Buzios

Known as Buzios, this is a resort town situated on a peninsula some 169 km northeast of Rio de Janeiro.  The name means cradle of the ‘buzios”, a conch species with a shell shaped like a pair of lips.  It became well known in the 1960s when Brigitte Bardot visited with her Brazilian boyfriend. The town has commemorated a statue to her. The waters around Buzios are affected by both warm southbound currents and Antarctic waters and sometimes, such as today, the water can be chilly even with at temperature in the high 30s C.  The area is popular with people from Rio and Sao Paulo and it was busy today, the last day of the Carnival holiday.  I took a tour on an open bus which circumnavigated the island so that we saw nice views of its many beaches, some of which are wild enough for surfing. I share a few photos that I took today, including the Brigitte Bardot statue.   Our next stop on the 15th is Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.
